The Barnes Elementary School renovation for Beaverton School District creates a safer, more welcoming, and more culturally responsive entry experience for students, families, staff, and visitors. Funded through the district’s bond program, the project centers on a new secure vestibule along with renovations to the existing administrative and student resource offices.

A new secure vestibule redirects the arrival sequence by flowing visitors through the admin office. The redesigned entrance improves visibility and access control while maintaining a warm and approachable character with a recognizable front door designed to feel distinct to the school.

Beyond security, the project was conceived as an opportunity to strengthen the school’s identity and better reflect its diverse, multicultural community. A large nature-inspired mural anchors the entry hall, drawing from the Pacific Northwest landscape and working with the school’s existing muted green, yellow, and brown palette. Built-in seating, display areas, and carefully integrated graphics create places to display student work and for school announcements and informal gathering.

The administrative suite was reorganized to improve staff workflow, supervision, confidentiality, and access to student services. Renovated spaces include the main office, principal’s office, nurse, counselors, social worker, conference and meeting areas, staff support spaces, and a centralized mail and work room.

Our team worked closely with the principal and educators through a series of meetings and surveys to understand operational needs and the qualities that would help students and families feel comfortable upon arrival. The result is an entry and office environment that balances security with belonging.
