The Mason St. Residence expands and updates a charming 1924 Craftsman home that had begun to feel cramped by the owners’ living standards. The renovation maintains the character of the original home while adding more space, improving circulation, and creating stronger connections between the house and backyard. A new detached two-car garage also provides dedicated space for the owner to work on and restore classic cars.
The reconfigured main level establishes a clearer sense of arrival through a defined foyer and more intuitive circulation between the living, dining, kitchen, and outdoor spaces. A new primary suite is located on the main floor to support long-term accessibility and aging in place, while additional bedrooms and flexible spaces allow the home to continue serving family and guests over time. The proposed plan also includes expanded utility, exercise, and guest accommodations within the lower level.
Because the owners frequently host friends and family, the rear of the home was opened to the large backyard through expansive glazing and multiple direct connections to a generous new deck. The kitchen, dining area, and living room work together as a cohesive social space, allowing gatherings to move easily between the interior and exterior. Broad steps and integrated ramps make the deck feel like an extension of the yard rather than a separate platform.
New additions, dormers, roof forms, lap siding, and shake accents were carefully composed to feel consistent with the original Craftsman architecture. The result is a more functional and enduring family home—one that retains its historic warmth while accommodating entertaining, hobbies, accessibility, and contemporary daily life.
